Thin is the “in” thing for smartphones now, and Xiaomi wants to be part of the party. However, despite reports of a new edge phone in the works, some people think that Xiaomi’s Edge smartphone could be a little too late, as it will reportedly be released in 2017. Can Xiaomi still succeed?
According to new reports, Xiaomi is looking into releasing the Xiaomi Edge in 2017, but the smartphone may be a little too late for the trend. Thin is in with smartphones now, along with edged or 2.5D displays. There’s no telling what Xiaomi is planning, but several reports have claimed that such smartphone is possibly in the works.
According to Softpedia, Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge and S7 Edge units seemed to have appealed positively to the market that Xiaomi wants to take on a similar path. Just days following reports that Xiaomi is working on an edged and curved mobile device, CEO Lei Jun reportedly confirmed the information.
Reports are not sure about what the device will be called, but some of the names include Edge or Mi Note Edge. Initially, the device was set to hit in September, but that may no longer be the case.
Gizmochina also reported that Xiaomi plans on using LG’s Curved Display panel on its upcoming device. The screen should be a 5.7-inch OLED display. Other features to expect include a Snapdragon 823 chipset, 6GB RAM and dual 12MP (or 13MP) rear cameras.
Reports also noted that part of the reason of the delay is that LG’s Curved Display panel is not yet ready for large-scale production. The expected release should be around Spring of 2017. As with a number of leaks and other tips, features could still change unless Xiaomi makes the final announcement.
