Bad luck followed Finn Balor as he suffered an injury to the right shoulder after winning the WWE Universal Championship, due to which he will be required to relinquish the title.
The injury was caused during a match between Balor and Seth Rollins at WWE SummerSlam 2016, when Balor took a running powerbomb to the barricade from the Architect.
Monday Night Raw General Manager Mick Foley announced the news on Twitter on Monday.
“Due to his injury, @StephMcMahon and I jointly accept @FinnBalor relinquishing of the @WWE Universal Championship. #Raw,” he wrote on Twitter.
The injury was found to be serious than it was previously thought, which raised concerns that he might require surgery. Finn Balor underwent an MRI on Monday which showed there was a “possible labrum tear,” as a result of the impact.
“He hit the wall during the match, dislocated his shoulder and was able to put it back in himself in a split second,” ring side physician Chris Robinson was quoted as saying by WWE. He will be receiving a surgical consult which will examine the seriousness of the injury and the recovery time that he will require. He added that if Balor undergoes a surgery he would be away from the ring for four to six months.
He was spotted wearing a sling at the hotel, but he seemed to have taken it off during the GMA interview.
However, the Demon King was able to complete the match, but he would be returning his title reign within 24 hours of earning it. He will be formally relinquishing his title at the Raw tonight, which will be accepted by Commissioner Stephanie McMahon and Foley.
For the Win reported that Balor helped with WWE’s brand extension with his quick ascension that upheld the New Era touted by the company. Finn Balor emerged as one of the most notable performers of ‘Raw’ in the past few weeks, but now it is unclear where Foley and McMahon are headed after the mishap, the Heavy.com reported.
