The Unites States is no longer the only superpower on air. As the West continues to keep Russia and China in check, both countries seemingly want to defeat it further as they become more aggressive over airspace and military hardware. Is it a new era at hand?
Aggressive China and Resurgent Russia
Washington just named “resurgent Russia” and “very, very aggressive China” as hindrances to its domination over airspace and international waters. The progressing technology of the two countries including recent encounters suggests that both countries are determined about their ambitions.
“Our concern is a resurgent Russia and a very, very aggressive China,” US Air Combat Command Commander Gen. Herbert Carlisle told USA Today.
“Their intent is to get us not to be there,” Carlisle said. “So that the influence in those international spaces is controlled only by them. My belief is that we cannot allow that to happen. We have to continue to operate legally in international airspace and international waterways. We have to continue to call them out when they are being aggressive and unsafe.”
Russia Expects Conflict
It is an understatement that anything that happens among these countries will have a profound impact globally. The report emphasized that stakes are high. However, it appears that Russia has anticipated such events. According to TASS, the deputy chief of Russia’s Security Council, Yevgeny Lukyanov, said that the recent incident involving the spy plane from the United States is unpleasant but it comes as no surprise.
“Intelligence work is proceeding,” he said.
“That it is dangerous goes without saying,” he added. “The risk of an emergency is growing.”
Lukyanov also added that everyone understands individual tasks like “reconnaissance by provocation, by activating our missile defense systems.”
“When they say that our planes make risky flyovers – go and look at what happens over Red Square on May 9, the distance at which our planes fly in our Kubinka Diamond formation. We may have different security standards,” the official added.
