Russia is pushing buttons of world powers across the globe as the United States retaliated against Moscow’s efforts in Syria. The United States warned that it will defend itself if necessary following an attack of Syrian troops near an area where U.S. Special Forces have been operating.
Russia Threatens US with Attack
The United States called out the recent activities of the forces of President Bashar al-Assad. According to a top U.S. military commander, the United States is prepared to defend itself following operations of Syrian planes and artillery near the location of American special forces.
According to reports, the United States deployed a small number of special forces troops to northern Syria to assist Kurdish Pershmerga and back up Syrian rebel groups that have been campaigning against Assad. However, two Syrian Su-24 ground-attack planes launched an operation on Thursday near the area of the American base.
According to the Independent, the incident emphasizes the complicated situation in Syria where the United States and Russia are on opposing sides.
America Promises All Out Retaliation
“We’ve informed the Russians where we’re at … [they] tell us they’ve informed the Syrians, and I’d just say that we will defend ourselves if we feel threatened,” said Lieutenant General Stephen Townsend, the official in charge of U.S. forces in Syria and Iraq since last week. The official also expressed his concerns about the situation with Russia.
According to the Daily Star, a number of troops needed to be evacuated because of what happened. This prompted Washington to boost efforts including jet patrols in northern Syria to avoid a similar incident. Townsend added that forces will be aiming to destroy the self-proclaimed ISIS caliphate in just a year.
