Novak Djokovic, Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova have all beaten their opponents during the first day of Wimbledon 2015.
Fresh from his defeat in the French Open against Stan Wawrinka, men’s No. 1 Djokovic advances to the next round by beating Philipp Kohlschreiber, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.
Serena Williams, still on a roll for her 21st grand slam title, won over Margarita Gasparyan, 6-4, 6-1.
Women’s No. 4, Maria Sharapova, bested her opponent, Johanna Konta, in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
Men’s No. 7, Milos Raonic, struggled to get past Daniel Gimeno-Traver with 6-2, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(4), while No. 5 Kei Nishikori needed five sets to survive Simone Bolelli of Italy, 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
Carla Suarez, women’s no. 9, bowed to Jelena Ostapenko, 6-2, 6-0.
Lucie Safarova likewise struggled against Alison Riske but eventually won with 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.
The second day will showcase the other bracket with Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Petra Kvitova and Simona Halep.
