Apple Pay is still being ignored by Walmart as it continues to promote its own Walmart app, through which loyal customers can make retail payments. Walmart Pay has grown over the month as the hypermarket chain branches out to include over 500 outlets across the states of Texas and Arkansas.
Walmart draws in over 20 million customers from the states of Texas and Arkansas alone, all of whom have access to the Walmart Pay app that makes paying for groceries and other regular items a breeze. Apple Insider reports that Walmart is quite confident the popularity of Walmart Pay will soon overshadow other alternative digital payment systems such as Apple Pay.
While the Walmart app did not support Walmart Pay earlier, it has recently included the option of paying through an e-wallet. The current payment method is being tested out by introducing it to Walmart customers from Texas and Arkansas.
9To5mac reports that the Walmart app works by recording one’s debit or credit card details onto the app. The QR code on the app is automatically scanned at the checkout counter, and payment is made. The process is faster and more convenient than paying hard cash or physically having one’s card scanned. This is because one need not enter a PIN number to pay by card, nor wait around for a receipt because a digital receipt is forwarded to one’s phone immediately after payment.
Walmart Pay also keeps track of one’s shopping preferences, gift card balances, and past receipts, and enables customers to refill their prescriptions. It works on any iPhone or smartphone and is able to work with almost all kinds of cards such as MasterCard, Visa, and Discover.
Daniel Eckert, senior vice president of services for Walmart stated, “We can’t wait to hear what our customers and associates in Texas think of Walmart Pay. The service was built to make shopping easier and faster, something we know our customers want.”
