Both Johns seemed to have messed it up during the South East Asian Games. Both are promising Filipino divers, and their dives splashed huge amount of water as their video going viral evoked criticism and laughter.
John Elmerson Fabriga, 21, and John David Pahoyo, 17, landed awkwardly on their backs, defying every technicalities of the aquatic sports in their 4th dives in the men’s 3-meter springboard event, according to Inquirer.net. It was quite obvious why the judges handed the divers big zeros.
It was a rare spectacle in the negative sense. The video racked up 1.6 million views after being posted on the Facebook page SGAG! The “awful” divers, too, viewed it and laughed over their June 7 performances. 17-year-old Pahoyo even commented on the video that disgraced him in front of the world. He also tagged his accomplice of the dismal show, Fabriga.
“I even laughed at myself after I did this dive,” he said. “I am still proud because not all of us has the privilege to represent our own country to such a big sporting event like this. And by the way can I ask all of you if you can still smile after getting embarrassed in front of thousands of people?”
But surely, Filipino sports officials didn’t find any humor in it. Philippine Sports Commission chair Richie Garcia said on Thursday that he asked for an explanation from the aquatics chief Mark Joseph.
“I will give the opportunity for the Philippine Swimming Inc. President to explain, because he fought for these divers to come here and compete,” said Garcia.
Both the young divers seemed to have redeemed themselves after the technical debacle later in the Games. Their performance was fantastic in the men’s 3-meter synchronized springboard event held on June 9.
