The discovery of a suspicious package on campus led to a sudden evacuation from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse by University Police.
WXOW 19 reports that the suspicious package was found near a gazebo just of Badger Street shortly after 3 p.m. According to a statement by Chief of Police Scott McCullough, they are “taking precautionary measures” in securing the university area until the said package can be secured. At this time, areas of the campus within a certain proximity of the area have been cleared. These areas include Angell, Drake, Wentz, Hutch Halls and the Whitney Center. Moreover, the University Police has already blocked off the area of the campus located between 15th Street and Pine near Angell Hall and Whitney Center. University of Wisonsin-La Crosse Chancellor Joe Gow has said that a bomb squad from Madison is already on its way to the campus.
McCullough is asking the entire university community to “stay clear of this area until we have an all clear message.” Those who may be in need of a place to stay while the situation continues can go to Mitchell Hall, which has been set up as a temporary campus shelter. Meanwhile, faculty and students who see any suspicious package on campus may contact the University Police at 608.789.9999.
According to the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Director of Residence Life and Graduate Faculty Dr. Nick Nicklaus, the university’s REC and Whitney Centers have also been closed.
