An unborn child is now the fifth fatal victim of the disastrous crash in Hyattsville, Maryland, that left dozens wounded.
The accident occurred when a pickup truck rammed into a church van carrying 16 people. ABC News reports that the crash occurred on a four-lane road in the suburbs of Washington. After the collision, the pickup truck and the van came to a halt in front of a two-story brick house.
The dead included two adults, a child and the driver of the pickup truck, according to Prince George’s County police spokeswoman, Julie Parker. The mother of the unborn child has survived, Parker confirmed, adding that she had a “late term pregnancy.” No further details regarding how far the pregnancy was divulged.
The deceased adults were in their 70s, while the child was a 6-year-old girl, a pastor who was one of the passengers in the church van said. The names of the deceased have not released pending notification of relatives, according to Reuters.
“Anytime you deal with children and fatalities and serious injuries it affects firefighters medics and police,” Mark Brady, Prince George’s County Fire spokesperson, said.
The pickup truck struck another car before crashing into the van, authorities said, adding that the number of dead could rise, according to CBS Baltimore.
