A service that helps netizens circumvent sites that have been blocked by an order issued by the UK High Court has gained massive popularity and become one of the most visited websites in the country. Currently ranked 192nd in the UK – ahead of both Spotify and Skype – Unblocked.pw provides access to blocked domains.
Porn barriers are the latest to be enforced by the government, following blocked accesses to torrent and video streaming websites.
‘Curb Access To Harmful Pornographic Content’
“Our one nation government is working hard to make the internet a safer place for children, the next step in this campaign is to curb access to harmful pornographic content which is currently far too widely available,” Cameron said.
“I want to see age restrictions put into place or these websites will face being shut down.”
The most visited porn websites in the UK, according to Alexa, include Pornhub (#41), XHamster (#44), Xvideos (#47), RedTube (#92), TubeCup (#105) and YouPorn (#122).
PornHub is visited more than Netflix and YouPorn is more popular than Vimeo.
Unblocked.pw ranks 192 in the list of the UK’s most visited websites. It provides access to some of the most popular torrent and video streaming websites, and also ebook archives that were ordered to be blocked in May, as reported by Torrent Freak.
“Fighting censorship has been the primary motivation behind running Unblocked,” the site’s operator said.
“It’s to show that whatever regulators do to censor things online, there will always be a way around it. The initial motivation came from when The Pirate Bay was blocked in the Netherlands. We set up Proxybay.co to maintain a list of Pirate Bay proxy sites and show people how to create their own.”
While Cameron’s office says that users seeking access to porn websites could confirm their ages by entering the details of their credit cards, most overseas ‘tube’ sites might not be in favor of the practice as it will hamper their business models by lowering traffic and ad revenue.
Open Rights Group says that blocking websites, as Cameron’s last resort, won’t work.
“While the government can shut down UK-based sites, these are few in number and represent a tiny proportion of the global porn industry. Cameron needs to clarify how he wishes to achieve his goals, given that most porn sites are hosted abroad,” says ORG’s Jim Killock.
“To block them, the government would have to introduce a national firewall, which would censor sites for everyone, and would likely be widely circumvented,” Killock said.
