Real Madrid has made it to the knockout rounds of the Champions League once more. The Spanish Giants pipped Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in a group league encounter to secure its round of 16 berth with two games in hand for the 19th straight season.
It was the French side who dominated the proceedings in the first half. The goal Real scored came against the run of play. Angel Di Maria, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic combined to apply pressure on Madrid’s defense. Custodian Keylor Navas saved Real for a couple of times.
Uruguayan star Edinson Cavani’s effort was cleared off the goal-line in the injury time of the first session.
Nacho Fernandez netted the solitary goal of the night for Rafael Benitez’s men two minutes after coming off from the bench replacing injured Marcelo.
It wasn’t Cristiano Ronaldo’s night. The Portuguese superstar’s effort from the long range went off target in the 50th minute. Argentine winger Di Maria almost scored twice in the dying moments of the game. Once his effort was parried by Navas in the second attempt, and in the other occasion, it hit the woodwork and went out.
“It was not comfortable for us at all,” said defender Sergio Ramos.
“We played a lot better away in Paris where we could only draw. It was a difficult game and it has given us a lot to think about.”
PSG now have 7 points from 4 outings, three behind group leaders Real.
