Sending private messages in Twitter just got tweaked. Users may now send messages comprised of 140 characters and more. But that’s just about that. Public tweeting will still remain confined to the sweet and short 140-cap.
On its developer blog, Twitter Inc. announced users may now be able to send long messages composed of 10,000 characters. This takes effect in July.
Speculations immediately mounted that Twitter may tweak the length for public tweets, but these were immediately thumbed down. Sachin Agarwal, Twitter’s DM product manager, said Twitter’s public side will remain as it is at 140 characters long.
“We’ve done a lot to improve direct messages over the past year and have much more exciting work on the horizon,” Agarwal wrote. “You may be wondering what this means for the public side of Twitter. Nothing! Tweets will continue to be the 140 characters they are today.”
Venture Beat, quoting Twitter investor Chris Sacca, described the change “as inspiring a whole new form of writing.”
But if consumers aren’t fond of receiving lengthy messages, they can always change their settings. Just uncheck the “Receive Direct Messages from anyone” box which is located in the Security and privacy sections in Twitter’s settings. Direct Messages are only visible between individual users.
Coinciding with the statement on the change was the announcement of new Twitter heads. Dick Costolo will step down as CEO effective July 1. Chairman and co-founder Jack Dorsey will take over as interim CEO until a successor for Costolo has been chosen.
“I am tremendously proud of the Twitter team and all that the team has accomplished together during my six years with the company,” Costolo said in a statement on Thursday. “We have great leaders who work well together and a clear strategy that informs our objectives and priorities. There is no one better than Jack Dorsey to lead Twitter during this transition.”
Twitter was founded in 2006. It went IPO in 2013.
