A 2-year-old girl is dead after suffering from abuse at the hands of her mother and her mother’s fiancé. According to a police report, the toddler died as a result of body slamming by a man who soon would have become her stepfather.
A pair of loving step grandparents had been raising young Adelaide “Addie” Mae Chaney up until recently. According to her grandfather, James S. Boyce, her mother, Cheyenne Cook, had taken her along when she moved out and got a new home with her fiancé, Richard Gamache Jr. “We thought the Mother was growing up when she announces she was engaged and was going to be moving out and getting a place with her fiancé. She removed Addie from our home on 5/10/17,” Boyce said.
On May 16, police responded to the 3800 block of Dorchester Court in House Springs in order to assist with EMS. The child was reportedly having seizures and paramedics transported her to the hospital. Doctors found significant swelling in her brain and had to remove a part of her skull to try to treat it. Tragically, however, young Adie died just a few days later.
During a visit to the child’s home, authorities found obvious signs of trauma. “She looked like she was in a bar fight from head to toe,” Boyce said. Authorities also later learned that Gamache had been performing wrestling moves on the young girl, which led to her death. In particular, Gamache had been performing a stunt known as the Batista Bomb or powerbomb. According to a report from New York Daily News, this wrestling move required picking someone up by the waist, swinging them up in the air then dropping them on the ground on their back.
Police: Child was ‘essentially tortured.’
“This child was essentially tortured,” Sheriff David Marshak remarked. “Our prayers are with ‘AC’ and the investigators that were intimately involved with this investigation.” Police have also said that they found evidence of the couple trying to cover up abuse of the young girl. According to a report from Fox 2 Now, Gamache had been abusing Addie for some time with her mother not intervening or seeking medical help for her child.
Police have now charged Gamache with abuse of neglect of a child. He faces a $500,000 cash-only bond. Meanwhile, police have also charged cook with endangering the welfare of a child. She is now facing a $2,500 cash-only bond.
Meanwhile, Addie’s family has set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for the little girl’s funeral expenses. “We need to push for stronger Grandparents rights in MO, we did not have custody of Addie,” Boyce wrote.
