In a recent interview with Screen Crush, Tilda Swinton has confirmed that she will play an Asian male as she transforms into The Ancient One in the upcoming Marvel movie “Doctor Strange.”
Asked about the character she will be playing, Tilda said, “I just really liked the premise of this and the idea of playing this character. I’m a Marvel fan and I think this particular world that Doctor Strange goes into is really, really, really exciting. I’m really interested as both an actor and a fan to see what’s done in this particular world.”
Moreover, she added, “The idea of playing The Ancient One is really just too tickling. I can’t say no to that!”
According to the Marvel Universe Wiki, the Ancient One is actually a Tibetan sorcerer who also goes by the aliases the Mystic, the Spirit Leopard, bTsan Saa, the High Lama and the Master. Doctor Strange, a surgeon, sought out the Ancient One to cure his hands, which was injured following an automobile accident that prevented him from performing any surgery. It was during his stay in the Himalayas that Strange learned that Mordo has been plotting against the Ancient One. Later on, Strange will go on to witness a fight between good (the Ancient One) and evil (Mordo) and it will lead him to find a “higher purpose in life.” This is what led Doctor Strange to become the Ancient One’s disciple. He would go on to become “the Ancient’s successor as sorcerer.”
While there is no word yet on the specific storyline of the upcoming “Doctor Strange” movie, a synopsis on IMDB about the upcoming film reads, “After his career is destroyed, a brilliant but arrogant surgeon gets a new lease on life when a sorcerer takes him under his wing and trains him to defend the world against evil.”
Scott Derrickson is said to be directing while Benedict Cumberbatch is set to play Doctor Strange. Moreover, Chiwetel Ejiofor was also cast as Baron Mordo. Meanwhile, Rachel McAdams is rumoured to be joining the cast as well.
Meanwhile, when asked about Doctor Strange, film producer Kevin Feige reportedly said, “I think ‘Dr. Strange’ would kick ass. I think we’ve done very well at the superhero genre, if you will, this street level superhero aspect of the Marvel Universe. I think with Thor you’ll see us cracking into the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe in a very good way that’s never been done before in our movies and I’d love to get into that supernatural element. I think that Dr. Strange could be a good way of being the lynchpin to that universe with Werewolf By Night, with Blade again someday – that side of the Marvel Universe.”
“Doctor Strange” will reportedly open in theaters on November 4, 2016.
