Jawbone has officially announced the latest entry into the company’s UP line of fitness bands and trackers – the UP3.
On the exterior, the UP3 features a design again crafted by leading industrial designer Yves Behar that consists of a central unit that houses all of the band’s electronics that’s attached to an adjustable band making it adaptable to many users. The UP3 is also now thinner and, if a post on the Jawbone blog is to be believed, will come in a rather large variety of different band designs, materials, textures, and colors.
As for the UP3’s fitness and health tracking features, it is equipped with a now larger array of sensors including a new tri-axes accelerometer, bioimpedance sensors, sensors that track skin and ambient temperature, and a new heart rate monitor that works more consistently than its competitors.
Software features that are coming to the UP3 include an advanced sleep mode that tracks the users sleep stages and provides in-depth information on sleep, a new activity tracker that uses improved algorithms to identify user workouts which then works in tandem with the new Smart Coach feature for the device’s UP App for smartphones to help users keep track of their progress as well as give personalized guidance to help users reach their fitness goals faster.
“Our mission was to create the world’s most powerful activity tracker in the smallest possible design, and we believe we have done that with the UP3 band” said Travis Bogard, vice president of product management and strategy at Jawbone. “Our advanced, multi-sensor platform delivers a huge amount of new health data, backed by our smart algorithms and our highly personalized Smart Coach system. And because the technology is fully updateable, we’re able to unveil great new features and experiences in the coming months.”
The Jawbone UP3 fitness tracker will be available sometime later this year for an SRP of $179.99 on the Jawbone online store as well as at Apple or Best Buy stores nationwide. Initially, only the Black Twist color will be available but more color options will be made available sometime in 2015. Additionally, the updated UP by Jawbone App for the UP3 will be available later this year for free on the Apple App Store and Google Play.
