The Nest Protect Smoke Alarm is Now Available Again After Recall

The Nest Protect Smoke Alarm is Now Available Again After RecallNest’s popular smoke alarm, the Protect, is now available again after a long recall and pull out that started a few months ago. And not only is the Protect available again for purchase on the Google Play store, it is now cheaper at $99, down from its original price of $129.

The Nest Protect was originally pulled from store shelves due to an issue discovered with the device’s Nest Wave feature which allows users to silence the sensor by waving their hand under it; the feature was deemed unsafe as the silence function might be triggered unintentionally or prematurely. This led to the company releasing an over-the-air update which disabled the feature in existing units as well as allowing owners to return their units for full refunds.

The Nest Protect units that are now available with the re-launch will already have the Nest Wave feature disabled although the device will still have its other features available including mobile notifications, remote control via an app, spoken warnings, early warning features, and a light ring that changes color depending on the level of danger, among other things. The Nest Protect also conducts self-tests and will display a green glow at night to assure users that it’s working well.

Additionally, users who’ve previously bought the Nest Protect at $129 can request for Nest Protect credit on the Nest website ( To qualify for the refund, the Protect must have been  purchase before June 15 paired to the user’s Nest Account, connected to the internet after April 3 and have not been previously submitted for credit or a full refund.

There are still two versions of the Nest Protect for sale at $99 – a wired and non-wired version. The wired version comes with an AC 120v connector wire for attaching to a user’s house wiring while the non-wired version comes with six long-life batteries. The wired version also comes with three long-life backup batteries for those instances where the user’s house’s power supply goes out.

The Nest Protect can be purchased on the Google Play store, the Nest website, and select retailers for $99 and is available in black or white color options.
