Barely a week before the start of the 2016 Rio Olympics, an unusual merchandise for the USA Olympics team is raking a good sale. It’s not even the popular shirt or jersey; it’s the $24.99 bucket hat.
So what’s so special about this hat that it overtook the pre-game sales of other popular products? This trend-setter, according to a report from the Bloomberg, has become the top-selling product under the official Team USA merchandise.
The red-colored hat is made and distributed by the New York-based Outerstuff, official distributor of Team USA merchandise in 2010 Olympics, 2014 Winter Games, and this year’s 2016 Rio Olympics.
After the successful partnership with the U.S. Olympics Committee during the 2010 winter Olympics, the firm was again commissioned by the USCO to be its official licensee for this year’s Rio Olympics in Brazil.
Jack Boyle, Fanatics President of Merchandising, told Bloomberg that items such as a bucket hat tend to perform better on sales as opposed to other traditional merchandise. But the items Fanatics make are not to be worn by the athletes who will be playing in Rio, as this privilege is reserved for high-paying sponsors.
“More traditional hats tend to do better among sports fans, but for big international events, such as the Olympics, Ryder Cup and World Cup, we know non-traditional items sell better,” Boyle was quoted as saying by Bloomberg.
According to the official website of the Team USA, the delegation of the 2016 U.S. Olympics Team is composed of 555 athletes, 263 men and 292 women competing in 30 different categories.
