In what is viewed as a strategy to deflect potential Internet trolls, Taylor Swift has purchased TaylorSwift.porn and TaylorSwift.adult, two domains that would’ve taken a serious toll on her image if handled by a different party.

Generic Top-level Domains

It should be noted that starting June 1, people will be given the opportunity to purchase hundreds of generic top-level domains (also called gTLDs) that end in .adult, .porn, and even .sucks. But the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann), the group behind the availability of these domains, is now letting companies and public figures get a head start by purchasing in advance.

Steve Miholovich is the SVP of marketing at Safenames, which is a domain registrar and advisory firm that caters to website owners.

“People who have bad intentions are going to do what they’re going to do and there’s nothing to prevent that,” he said, as quoted by CNN Money.

Strengthening the Swift Brand

Taylor Swift’s purchase of these domains is clearly a part of her strategy to strengthen her brand.

On Jan 2015, The Rolling Stone reported that Swift has trademarked certain phrases part of her song lyrics, which means companies and individuals will first need to acquire legal permission to be able to use these anywhere.

The phrases are “party like it’s 1989,” “this sick beat,” “cause we never go out of style,” “could show you incredible things,” and “nice to meet you, where you been?”
