Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic, who play the lead characters of cancelled show “Castle,” hate each other! Not only was the show cancelled because of their feud, the two’s differences make a spinoff impossible as well!
While ABC still maintains that the real reason that “Castle” never got renewed for a ninth season was because of a drop in its ratings, some sources claim that the reason is something else altogether.
Fans got to see Richard Castle romancing Kate Beckett on screen, which led them to tie the knot on the show in 2014. However, the story behind the screen is something else altogether.
“Stana Katic and Nathan Fillion completely despise each other,” the source told Us. “They will not speak when they are off set, and this has been going on for seasons now.”
‘Castle’ Season 9 Cancelled
Stana apparently felt bullied by Nathan’s attitude towards her off-screen. She could be spotted retiring to her make-up room in a fit of tears sometimes in the middle of the shoot, reports Movie News Guide. Season 8 was the last straw for their less than cordial relationship.
“This season, it got so out of hand they made Stana and Nathan go to couples counseling together,” shared the insider.
After it became apparent that the everyday feud was not going to be solved anytime soon, the showrunners reportedly decided to write Stana’s character off from the show.
Even though they attributed the decision to budget cuts, some reported that it was pretty clear that it was because the show was suffering due to Nathan and Stana’s feud.
However, things got worse as ABC decided against renewing “Castle” for season 9, making the showrunners scramble to somehow turn season 8 finale into a series finale.
The end result was a nonsensical, open-ended series finale, which made loyal fans of the show take to social media to express their indignation – some hoping “Castle” would return, or at least get a spinoff.
But the feud has reportedly permanently put off the showrunners from doing any of these!
Giving the fans some silver lining to hold on to, ABC Entertainment President Paul Lee spoke to TV Guide and revealed the possibility of a “Castle” spin-off happening somewhere in the future.
“We’d love for Castle to keep going for many years to come,” Lee said. “There are a lot of conversations going on about how we can do that. I don’t want to give glimpses to where they go, but there are lots of good ideas in there. I’m feeling optimistic that we’ve got some good ideas.”
But with the feud between the lead characters getting in the way, one has to wonder whether the “good ideas” will remain just that – ideas that never materialize into anything.
Will the fans want to watch a spin-off show where Castle exists without Beckett by his side? Will spin-off include the lead characters at all? Let’s wait and watch.
