South China Sea Tensions: China, America Will Not Back Down

China does not want the United States meddling with the affairs connected to the South China Sea. In a recent series of events, Beijing reportedly told the West to mind its own business despite Washington maintaining its stance. Is China and US about to engage in a world war?

China Wants the US to Back Off

Suffice to say, the United States and China have been at each other’s throat in a number of things but mostly in the Asia Pacific region. The United States has been challenging Beijing on its claims over the South China Sea while the latter is also questioning the West’s planned deployment of missile defense systems in Korea. Most analysts believe that if both world powers will not back down then the the rest of the globe will see a clash of titans soon.

Recently, a senior Chinese diplomat said that the United States should not meddle with the policies in the South China Sea including China’s affairs. According to the official, the US should just remain neutral on things.

China has expressed anger over the alleged “provocative” measures that the United States military resulted to. Some of the West’s forces have started patrolling the disputed waters to question China’s claims on freedom of navigation. Nonetheless, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Zheng Zeguang maintained that China reserves the right to protect its maritime and sovereignty rights.

“In fact the United States is not a claimant in the South China Sea dispute, and its said it takes no position on territorial disputes,” Business Insider quoted Zheng.

“So we hope the U.S. can stick to its promises and not choose sides, but can set its position based on the rights and wrongs of the case rather than whether somebody is an ally,” he added.

“I think if they can do this, and if they can stop provocative acts targeted at China’s sovereignty and security interests, then the U.S. can play a constructive role in maintaining peace and stability in the South China Sea and promote a lowering of the temperature on this issue.”

China Concerned Over Korea’s New Missile System

On top of this, China and the United States are also against each other over the latter’s plans to deploy American THAAD missile defense system to the Korean peninsula. According to Breaking Defense, China maintains that if the deployment pushes through then the country could just be within the target range. The United States countered that Beijing should not be worried at all because it is a self-defense move in favor of Korea.
