Sony Details Playstation 4 Update 1.70, Introduces SHAREfactory

Sony Details Playstation 4 Update 1.70, Introduces SHAREfactorySony has released official details of the next major update, called Update 1.70, for their next-generation console – the Playstation 4 – including a preview of their new SHAREfactory app. The PS4’s upcoming major update was originally announced last March during this year’s Game Developer’s Conference.

SHAREfactory is Sony’s rich video editor app for the Playstation 4. Users will be able to create their own customized gameplay videos directly on their Playstation 4 similar to Microsoft’s Upload Studio on the Xbox One. Users will be able to combine and edit gameplay clips and add their own touches with different filters, themes, and transition effects. Users will also be able to add video commentary with picture-in-picture capability via the Playstation Camera. Audio tracks included in the app or original music users can import can also be used in the user videos. Finally, the customized videos can be shared with friends on PSN and/or on social networks such as Facebook.

Sony is also making changes to the PS4’s SHARE feature including the ability to adjust the default recording time of gameplay videos to shorter increments and the ability to choose who videos are shared with. Sony has also removed the defaults saves for screenshots and video clips with Update 1.70. Users will also be able to export their SHAREfactory videos as well as other recorded clips and screenshots to a USB drive. Additionally, Sony will finally allow users to switch off HDCP to allow recording of high definition video and audio via external recording devices such as an Elgato capture card which is something users have been asking Sony to allow  with their consoles since the Playstation 3.

Lastly, Sony is introducing an auto pre-download feature with Update 1.70. The new feature will allow users to pre-download games they’ve pre-ordered several days before the game’s release date. This means users will be able to play new games as soon as they’re unlocked on released day.

“Some of these features were a direct result of the great feedback we’ve been getting from you, our dedicated gamer community. We enjoy listening to your comments, and encourage you to continue sharing your thoughts with us. And this is just the beginning,” said Scott McCarthy, Sony USA’s Director of Product Planning & Software Innovation, “We’ve got a lot more coming in PS4 system software update v1.70 and beyond. The PS4 experience will constantly evolve, and new innovative ideas can come from anywhere to ensure the platform continues to deliver the best in gaming and entertainment every time you turn it on.”

Sony did not say when Update 1.70 will start rolling out but they did say that more information on other upcoming features will be shared as the release date for the update draws near.
