Sony announces that its SmartEyeglass Develop Edition will be available for sale from March 10 in the United States and Japan and is now available for pre-order in the United Kingdom and Germany.
It will be sold through Sony’s application development support website, the Sony Developer World.
The device will also be sold through enterprise customers in France, Italy, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands and Sweden as part of an effort to promote developing apps necessary for industrial use.
SmartEyeglass boasts of a transparent lens eyewear that is lightweight and has unique hologram optics. The holographic waveguide technology superimposes the texts, symbols and images for a complete virtual reality experience, Sony said in its announcement.
When used with compatible smartphone models and applications, the SmartEyeglass offers number of possible uses. The sports fanatics for example can get stats of their favorite player, league and team even while watching the game. The travel enthusiasts can navigate instructions and real time information while wandering in places they travel.
“Going forward, Sony will accelerate its efforts to promote the development of apps for SmartEyeglass, as it eyes the commercialization of the product for both consumers and enterprise customers in 2016,” the company said in a statement.
Sony Mid-term Corporate Strategy
Following Sony’s announcement of the SmartEyeglass on Feb 17, the company thereafter announced its mid-term corporate strategy for fiscal year 2015-2017.
On Wednesday, Feb 18, Chief Executive Officer Kazuo Hirai announced the company is increasing its target in operating earnings by fiscal 2017. Sony will prioritize its Return on Equity with a target for consolidated ROE of more than 10 percent and a target for consolidated operating profit of more than 500 billion yen.
