“Sons of Anarchy” spinoff is now officially confirmed, 8 months after Kurt Sutter announced his plans to revisit FX’s crime-drama series. The network has ordered a pilot script with the first episode penned by show producer Elgin James.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the spinoff titled ‘Mayans MC’ will feature the same dark, visceral spirit that made ‘Sons of Anarchy’ so popular. This time, the spirit of the show which featured the iconic American biker outlaws will be shown from a Latino point of view.
The Mayans played the role of a biker gang in California composed of mainly Mexican-Americans. They were engaged in heroin distribution and were shown to be the Sons’ rivals early in the show but later formed a love-hate relationship with them as business partners.
Kurt Sutter stated that ‘Mayans MC’ will be a different show than Sons, noting that the show will have a unique tone, pace, and storytelling. Also, the spinoff will not be set in northern California, unlike the original series.
According to IGN, Sutter explained that he wanted a unique and strong Latino voice that Elgin James provided. He found it inappropriate for a white guy from Jersey to write about Latino culture and traditions.
James spent his teenage years in Boston homeless, helped found a multi-ethnic street gang that targeted Neo-Nazis and drug dealers. He later moves to Los Angeles and was guided by the Sundance Institute Feature Film program. He later went to prison for gang-related crimes but not after he made his directorial debut a few months earlier with ‘Little Birds’.
Should the pilot give way to a full series, the show will be a great addition to other scripted drama series currently airing. ‘Sons of Anarchy’ spinoff ‘Mayans MC’ will also join the ranks ofother spinoff series based on a storied franchise such as ‘Breaking Bad’ and The ‘Walking Dead’.
