The third installment of Shenmue still hasn’t been released or even made yet, but it has already broken records.
On Kickstarter, the game has managed to raise more than $2 million. Any minute now, the amount is expected to go past the third-million mark.
The two million dollar goal was achieved in just nine hours, making it the fastest game to reach that amount even on Kickstarter. According to Statista, the fastest projects to gain a million dollars include Project Eternity and the Pebble Watch.
The “Shenmue 3” project, which was announced during Sony’s E3 press conference, aimed to develop the follow-up to the successful Shenmue games. The last game “Shenmue 2,” was released fourteen years ago.
The fundraiser on Kickstarter pledged a $2 million goal, and now that it has already accomplished such, it still has 30 more days. The unreleased game is expected to gain even more money by July, making it one of the biggest fund-raised videogame projects ever.
According to its Kickstarter page, the new Shenmue “will have familiar elements from its predecessors and new fight mechanics to achieve a new level of interactive storytelling.”
“If we do not reach our funding goal, Shenmue 3 will not go forward,” says the page. No fears about the project being halted now that the fans (and their wallets) have spoken.
