Shailene Woodley, the “Divergent” star, was arrested while protesting the nearly completed construction, Dakota Access Pipeline.
She was in Sioux County, North Dakota, at a construction site along with hundreds of protesters. Rob Keller, the Morton County Sheriff’s Department spokesman, told ABC that she was arrested for allegedly trespassing and being part of a riot which involved 300 people.
The incident was captured this afternoon on her official Facebook page, during a live stream, where she said, “Why am I being arrested and no one else is?” and added, “It’s because I’m well-known, it’s because I have 40,000 people watching.”
According to Page Six, she was responded by the law Enforcement that “you were identified” and also that she had “trespassed on the property.” While fans cry, “We love you!”, Woodley is taken away with her hands behind her back.
The protest was about the construction of a 1,172-mile pipeline, to which the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe had appealed to the Federal Court for halting the process, because their cultural sites on the North considered as sacred and their water supply would be threatened. The Court had rejected the appeal and hence the protest came into being.
The charges are both of misdemeanours which carry punishments of 30 days in jail and a fine of $1,500. According to Cecily Fong, North Dakota Department of Emergency Services, the 24 year old won’t even reach the inside of a cell. “Some sort of bail will be posted and she’ll post bail and get out of jail.”, said Fong.
The actress dubbed that she had engaged in a “peaceful protest”. A representative of Woodley says, “She appreciates the outpouring of support, not only for her, but more importantly, for the continued fight against the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline.”
