Struggling with her physical conditions on the hottest day of the tournament so far, Serena Williams managed to beat Timea Bacsinszky in the semifinals after conceding the first set at the Roland Garros. Serena’s mission of winning all four Grand Slam titles in a year is alive now, and the vintage American is now only one win away from her 20th Grand Slam title.
Bacsinszky, the Swiss surprise of this French Open on her maiden Grand Slam semifinal outing, notched up the first set 6-4. This is the fourth time in this edition of the tournament that the 33-year-old American came back to win after being one set down. She blew her Swiss opponent 6-3 6-0 in the next two sets. Serena vomited on court, but then won 10 straight games to seal her final berth.
“I don’t think I’ve ever been this sick – I didn’t expect to win that, and I can’t believe I won.” Serena appeared bunged up, pale and tired while speaking in the post-match press-conference.
“I got the flu after my third-round match and I haven’t been getting better. Hopefully this is the worst and I’ll get better.
“I really thought I was going to lose, and I thought: if I’m going to lose, I might as well go for winners. I was so tired, and I just fought for every point.”
