Samsung has presented its entry into the burgeoning virtual reality market with the announcement of the Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition headset.
“The Samsung Gear VR goes far beyond expectations of how mobile technology can be used to consume content, and is a powerful representation of the progressive innovation of the Gear series,” said JK Shin, President and CEO of IT & Mobile Communications Division at Samsung Electronics. “We are pleased to have partnered with Oculus VR to bring this incredibly immersive mobile content experience to consumers.”
The Samsung Gear VR was designed in partnership with the world’s leading company in virtual reality technology, Oculus, who created the world’s currently most popular virtual reality headset, the Oculus Rift. Because it is co-designed with Oculus, the Samsung Gear VR works with the Oculus Mobile SDK and, according to Oculus, uses “variations of the Oculus Tracker and firmware” that’s built into the headset to maximize accurate low-latency 3D tracking.
”We are thrilled to reveal the Gear VR Innovator Edition, a state-of-the-art mobile VR experience powered by Oculus,” said John Carmack, CTO of Oculus. “The deep technical partnership with Samsung has enabled us to create a virtual reality headset with world class resolution and performance, all on a completely mobile platform.”
What makes the Gear VR unique from other VR headsets that have been recently announced is that it works in-tandem with the Galaxy Note 4 phablet that Samsung also announced at the same conference. By attaching the Note 4 to the Gear VR, it is able to utilize the phablet’s CPU and GPU to power the device and the 5.7-inch Quad HD resolution screen as the headset’s display. The Gear VR also features a light-weight construction, flexible cushioning, and completely wireless connectivity.
The Samsung Gear VR will be available in Frost White through Samsung’s online channel retailers as well as select carriers around the globe sometime later this year.
