Samsung has announced, at the Google I/O conference, its first ever Android Wear-powered smartwatch – the Samsung Gear Live – and has opened pre-orders for the new device. It is the company’s first Android-based smartwatch since the first Galaxy Gear.
“Samsung has been a pioneer in the quickly-evolving wearable market, and the launch of Gear Live furthers our efforts to deliver a simple and intuitive wearable experience to consumers,” said JK Shin, CEO and President of IT & Mobile Division, Samsung Electronics. “Through our long-term close collaboration with Google, we have successfully incorporated the capabilities of Android Wear into the Gear Live, in a way that only Samsung can do. I am confident that Samsung and Google together, we will grow the smart wearable market to positively impact consumers’ life.”
The Gear Live features a very similar exterior design as the Samsung Gear 2 with its square face and a 1.63-inch Super AMOLED screen at a screen resolution of 320 x 320 pixels. It also features a 1.2GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage, and a 300mAh battery. It is both dust and water resistant with its IP67 certification. It will be able to track the user’s heart rate with its built-in heart rate monitor which is compatible with a slew of Android fitness apps.
Since the Gear Live features Google’s made-for-wearables Android Wear operating system, it will be capable of Android Wear’s slew of Google Now-like features including voice search and navigation, notifications, Google Maps & Navigation, Gmail, and even Hangouts. The Gear Live can be paired with any device running Android 4.3 or higher via Bluetooth 4.0.
“Watches powered by Android Wear aim to help people get access to useful information the moment you need it, at a glance,” said Sundar Pichai, SVP, Android, Chrome & Apps. “It’s exciting to be working closely with Samsung on the launch of the Gear Live-with it’s all-day battery and vibrant display-to bring more smart wearables to the market.”
As previously mentioned the Samsung Gear Live is now available for pre-order from the Google Play Store for $199.99 and will be available for purchase online and at Best Buy retail stores on July 7, 2014. It will be available in Black and Wine Red and will come with a standard black 22m wristband but an array of interchangeable straps will also be made available by the company.
