Princes William & Harry, and Kate Middleton will miss the Rio 2016 Olympics in August. But, was the cancellation of the royal trio’s trip to Rio due to the Zika virus?
It has been reported in a section of the media that the Duchess of Cambridge cancelled her trip to Rio due to the outbreak of the Zika virus in Brazil. The 34-year-old royal reportedly wants to have another child and hence does not want to risk traveling to the country.
The Zika virus mainly affects pregnant women, resulting in thousands of babies being born with deformities. In addition, if a man gets infected by the virus, through a mosquito bite, he could potentially affect his sexual partner and put their unborn baby at risk. However Kensington Palace has denied that the Zika virus affected the royals’ decision, Hello reports.
“It was under consideration at some point that some or one of them might go, but for a whole range of reasons they are not going,” said a source, speaking to Hello. In fact Kate Middleton, William and Harry have other overseas trips lined up in the coming weeks, and hence they may have cancelled their trip to Rio for the Olympics.
Among the British royals slated to attend Rio 2016 is only Princess Anne. Queen Elizabeth’s daughter is likely to attend the games. Anne’s daughter Zara Phillips, who is an Olympic silver medalist failed to qualify this year in the eventing team.
Meanwhile, apart from Kate, William and Harry, another royal who is avoiding Rio 2016 is Princess Charlene of Monaco. The princess has twins – Princes Jacques and Princes Gabriella with her husband Prince Albert II, Daily Mail reports.
Charlene, 38, is a former Olympic swimmer. “She doesn’t like what she’s been reading and hearing about the Zika virus,” said Albert. Many celebs and sportsperson have pulled out of the games, in spite of the fact that the Zika virus is under control.
Sporting names, who have pulled out of the Games include Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy, who is engaged to fiancée Erica Stoll. Besides, Greg Rutherford’s partner Susie Verrill also revealed that the athlete has had his sperm frozen ahead of the Games, and that she would not attend in person.
