Here Are The Real Things That Can Make You Happy: It’s Not Money

  • Researchers at the London School of Economics found that happiness has nothing to do with money.
  • Denmark is the happiest place on Earth; Scandinavian countries occupy the top 5 list.

Happiness is a state of mind, and it can vary from person to person. While some things can bring happiness to someone, it may not be the same case for others. There is, however, a consensus to the very least, on what makes most people happy, and it has nothing to do with money after all.

Since time immemorial, humanity has been in a constant search for the true source of happiness. Several studies have tried to decipher what brings genuine happiness to people, and with impressive results so far.

Factors Affecting Happiness

One of these studies was conducted by the London School of Economics, which showed that relationships and mental health is the key to happiness. The study results reaffirmed the findings of previous studies pointing out that happiness, in most cases, is not always about having material possessions or money.

The study asked around 200,000 volunteers about the things that make them happy. These are the things people encounter every day, which the researchers perceive as factors that influence happiness.

The researchers have found that being in a relationship makes most people happy. In contrast, a blow to one’s mental health threatens a person’s perceived feeling of happiness. Depression and anxiety are among the mental health conditions that threaten one’s happiness.

The Happiest Places on Earth

Each year, the World Happiness Index issues a list of the happiest country in the world based on a standardized happiness indicator. This year, Denmark tops the list as the happiest country in the world. Rounding up the top five are Switzerland, Iceland, Norway, and Finland. The U.S. ranks only 13th this year, the report noted.

“The central idea of this paper, drawn from Aristotle, is that there is an intrinsic value in relational and civil life, without which human life does not fully flourish,” the report reads.

The report noted that the happiness of people provides an indicator of human welfare in a given country. In fact, the happiness index is a more reliable of human welfare than education, wealth, and governance, among others.
