Remember the sweet yet tragic flick Fault in Our Stars? Well, the heartwarming story just got real, very real, as a young couple is both fighting against the deadly cystic fibrosis and are in serious condition.
CNN first reported the story of Katie Prager and her husband Dalton Prager, 25 and 26, respectively, as well as their fight against cystic fibrosis, a rare genetic disorder that affects vital internal organs such as lungs, liver, and pancreas.
Their story began when they were just 18, when Katie messaged Dalton, knowing he’s also suffering from the disease. Katie only intended to give Dalton some words of encouragement through Facebook, but soon they fell in love. The rest is history.
Fault In Our Stars Just Got Real
As their relationship started to deepen, their desire to meet each other in person has grown much stronger. But Katie’s doctors are apprehensive with the idea, as Dalton has been infected with Burkholderia cepacia, a severe infection common among people with cystic fibrosis.
But Katie, despite her doctors’ warning, decided to meet with Dalton. Two years into the relationship, they decided to get married in 2011. But things didn’t go smoothly, and like what Katie’s doctors have feared, she contracted Burkholderia cepacia.
“I told Dalton I’d rather be happy — like really, really happy — for five years of my life and die sooner than be mediocre happy and live for 20 years. That was definitely something I had to think about, but when you have those feelings, you just know. I don’t look back because I can’t really change the past. I’ve had this time with Dalton and so I might as well keep looking forward,” Katie told CNN.
The couple’s condition has worsened since they were first diagnosed with the disease, but neither of them is giving up. They both received a kidney transplant and are recovering separately near their respective hometowns.
All they wanted now is to be close to each other while they enjoy the remaining days of their lives. Katie showed no resentment or bitterness for acquiring such condition, believing that God chose the battle for her. All she wanted is to be reunited with her husband, KSDK reported.
