The suspect of the brutal killing of 8-year-old Madyson Middleton is a kid himself who is a yo-yo champion. The 15-year-old boy, who was generally described as quiet and shy by residents of Tannery Arts Center in Santa Cruz, is going to be tried as adult.
The horrific death of 8-year-old Madyson Middleton
Middleton was reported missing on Sunday, July 26 at around 6 p.m. She was last seen late Sunday afternoon and was captured by a CCTV riding her Razor scooter around the Tannery Arts Center Complex.
Late afternoon on Monday, July 27, at approximately 7:55 p.m., a Santa Cruz Police detective discovered the body of Middleton at the bottom of a large dumpster-sized recycle bin on the ground floor of the complex. From how the corpse was hidden, it was obvious that the suspect had gone to great lengths to conceal the body. An autopsy is still ongoing to determine the exact cause and manner of death, according to the Santa Cruz Police Department.
At the time of the discovery, 15-year-old, Adrian Jerry Gonzalez was standing near the location where Middleton’s body was discovered. Detectives naturally interviewed the boy who also resides in the Tannery Art Complex.
The interview has led the detectives to locate evidences that link Gonzalez to Middleton’s death. Specific information remains confidential at this point. However, Santa Cruz police said they were able to find Middleton’s belongings inside Gonzalez’ apartment.
“We have determined that Madyson was an acquaintance of the suspect.Evidence suggests that Madyson was lured to the suspect’s apartment willingly,” the Santa Cruz Police told press.
“Additionally, we have determined that Madyson was murdered inside of the suspect’s apartment and eventually carried downstairs to the recycle bin and concealed within the bin,” the police said.
“Evidence in the case indicates that Madyson was killed prior to the initial call to police on Sunday July 27 that 6:08 pm.”
Yo-yo kid, to be tried as adult
District Attorney Jeffrey Rosell announced that charges have been filed against Gonzalez for the sexual assault and murder of Middleton. Gonzalez has been charged as an adult with murder, rape and other sexual assault-related offenses. Based on these charges, Gonzalez faces life in prison if convicted, Rosell said in a statement.
Yo-yo kid was depressed, developed dark side
In some Instagram posts, in the lead up to Middleton’s murder, seen and reported by San Jose Mercury News, Gonzalez revealed a chilling vibe underneath his persona. On Monday, the second day of the search for Middleton, Gonzalez posted a black-and-white clip of hands playing the piano. The music being played was Gary Jule’s version of “Mad World,” most popularly known as the soundtrack of 2001’s “Donnie Darko.”
The caption of the clip reads: “The Dreams in which I’m Dying are the Best I’ve ever had.”
In another post, Gonzalez was standing in an open field. The caption reads: “In solitude, you’re the only one I want beside me.”
Speaking with the San Jose Mercury News, clinical psychologist Oscar Cervantes said Gonzalez seemed to be dealing “with depression and thinking about suicide.”
Neighbors of both Gonzalez and Middleton were shocked. Lila Silas said she had always know Gonzalez as a pleasant boy.
“First I’m very, very heartbroken for Maddy. I can’t speculate for A.J. or his mental health history, but to do something like that, he must have had some history we didn’t know about,”Silas said.
Another resident, Setorro Garcia, said: “He was the quiet kid that played with the yo-yo.”
