Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana is christened on July 5. Princess Charlotte was baptized using water from the River Jordan. Prince George, meanwhile, stole the spotlight with his red shorts and embroidered white shirt that reminded everyone of the same outfit worn by Prince William when he was just two years old.
Princess Charlotte is christened
Princess Charlotte was baptized by the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby. The Reverend Canon Jonathan Riviere and the rector of Sandringham group of parishes were there to support Welby, the palace said in its official announcement.
The princess was baptized using the water from the River Jordan and with the Lily Font which was kept in the Tower of London since 1841. Princess Charlotte wore a christening rope with a design inspired by the silk and lace robe worn for every royal baby for 163 years.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have chosen the hymns Praised to the Lord, The Almighty and Come Down, O Love Divine, the palace said. The lesson is from Matthew 18, verses 1-5, read by Mr James Meade. The anthems are I will Sing With The Spirit and God Be In My Head, both by John Rutter.
No members of the royals as godparents
Prince William and Kate Middleton chose five godparents for daughter Princess Charlotte. Prince George had seven godparents. There are no members of the royal clan who stood as godparents.
One of the godmothers is the daughter of one of Princess Diana’s sisters, The Guardian UK reported. Other godparents were Sophie Carter, James Meade, Adam Middleton and Prince William’s close friend Thomas van Straubenzee.
The royal family of four marched from Sandringham House to the church in order to meet with the well-wishers. This is the first time that the four were out in public as a complete family.
The ceremony was very private as there were only 20 people who joined the royal family inside the church. Queen Elizabeth, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall joined the royal family inside the church.
Michael and Carole Middleton together with siblings Pippa and James were also present during the ceremony. Prince George’s nanny Maria Borrallo was also present during the ceremony.
Prince Diana’s inspiration
Writing for The Telegraph, Gordon Rayner said Princess Charlotte’s christening was very much inspired by Princess Diana – from the choice of godparents to the choice of music to Prince George’s outfit. Prince George has worn almost identical red shorts and embroidered shirt with the outfit worn by Prince William during Prince Harry’s birth.
