After eight years, OJ Simpson will finally be released on parole after attempting to pull an armed robbery in a Las Vegas hotel resort. The 70-year-old was sentenced to a 33-year sentence, but could get out in nine years for good behavior, which seems to have been the case. Once known for his abilities as a football player, Simpson gained international infamy during a scandal where he supposedly killed his then-girlfriend and her lover.
Simpson was sentenced back in 2008, so it’s surprising to see that the parole meeting took over 30 minutes, according to ESPN. “Thank you, thank you, thank you,” an emotional Simpson said while his sister, Shirley Baker, wept and hugged Arnelle Simpson, his daughter. When he was finally led down the hall, the happiness could really be seen in his face as he thanked God for the parole.
“I’ve spent nine years making no excuses about anything. I am sorry that things turned out the way they did,” Simpson said in his closing remarks during the hearing. “I had no intent to commit a crime. … I’ve done my time. I’d just like to get back to my family and friends — believe it or not, I do have some real friends — and I tried to be helpful to everybody.”
Simpson was let go after eight years due to the fact that he has a low risk to commit another crime, given his age. Aside from the infamous case against years ago, he hasn’t really been accused of any other crime, so it makes some sense to let him go. Even one of the memorabilia owners he robbed in the Las Vegas resort came to his defense, claiming that Simpson never pointed a gun at him. “He is a good man. He made a mistake,” said the owner, adding that the two remain friends to this day.
