Joyce Mitchell’s husband was hurt, angry and in disbelief as he heard her admit that she gave fugitives Richard Matt and David Sweat power tools in order to escape Clinton Correctional Facility.
Lyle Mitchell cannot make of her denial of a sexual relationship with either Matt or Sweat but agreeing to take pills which Matt gave her to knock her out and flee with them.
A broken heart, a broken trust
Lyle very much recalls the moment his wife told judge that she loves him and would not hurt him.
“When it came down to her hurtin’ me, that’s when she said something was wrong. She said she was in too deep, she didn’t know how to get out of it,” Lyle told NBC’s TODAY show.
Lyle said Mitchell admitted that Matt tried to kiss her for a number of times, but that she had always refused his advances.
She, however, confessed of showing Matt “a little affection.”
“She swore on her son’s life that definitely, ‘Never have I ever had sex’ [with Matt or Sweat],” Lyle said.
He said their marriage of 14 years was excellent until that day the two fugitives escaped prison.
“We never fight. We’re together, I’ll bet you, 95 percent of the time. We work together, we never leave the house unless we’re together.”
Asked if he will stand by his wife through the course this ordeal, Lyle said: “I don’t know what to think. I do not know.”
“Do I still love her? Yes. Am I mad? Yes. How could she do this? How could she do this to our kids?”
Mitchell revealed how she sneaked in tools for Matt and Sweat
Mitchell put hacksaw blades into frozen meat and asked a prison guard, Gene Palmer, to bring the meat into Clinton Correctional Facility and give it to Matt. The information was revealed by an unnamed source who has spoken with CNN. Palmer, who is currently on paid leave, did not run the meat through the prison’s metal detector.
Palmer was not the only guard lured by Mitchell to take favors for Matt.
Some guards she enticed in exchange for some baked goods. At some point, Mitchell asked a prison official to have Sweat and Matt in cells next to each other the source said.

Palmer on the other hand has violated prison policy when he decided not to run the meat through the metal detector. Palmer’s Attorney, Andrew Brockway, argued that his client did not know that there were blades in the meat. Mitchell has lured him of carrying it into the prison facility, Brockway said.
Brockway said his client was acquainted with both Matt and Sweat. Matt had even given him a painting during one occasion. Palmer, however, did not know that the two had plans of escaping prison.
Palmer had in fact used Matt and Sweat as sources for information that would “ensure the safety of his co-workers and of the facility, and of other inmates,” Brockway said.
“He wants these two individuals to be caught, and anything that he can do to help law enforcement do their job, he’s willing to cooperate,” Brockway told CNN.
