Nigel Barker said he was sexually assaulted as a child. The fashion photographer revealed this harrowing expereince Tuesday on SiriusXM show Gentlemen’s Code.
As per People, Nigel detailed how he was approached by a man in his 40s when he was 8 years old. As he was young, he was naive and believed he was just helping the man find an address.
Once Nigel reached the place, the man told him he could not understand English so he needed a guide to read the door names. “I went up to the door and read the names on the buzzers … I went to push it, and he pushed me from behind, jolted me through the doors and I fell to my feet inside the door.”
Nigel recounted the horror he felt at that moment. “The door closed and I’m not trapped between a stairwell inside and a shut door. I have a man who is much bigger than me, push me to the ground, grab me, pull my trousers and my pants down. I’m now exposed and I’m screaming and thrashing.”
Luckily for Nigel, he was able to get out of the situation. He pushed the person and got the chance to squeeze through him. He ran back to his home but the impact of the incidence stayed with him for a long period of time.
Nigel Barker talked about his experience of sexual abuse for this year’s Sexual Assault Awareness Month, ET Online reported. He wants to raise awareness about sexual abuse, especially when kids are victims as well. He wants people to talk about it so enough noise can be created to do something about it.
He mentioned, “Get out there. Talk about it. And don’t be afraid.
“Empower our children and our kids to do just that.”
