Talks of the follow-up to X-Men: Apocalypse is already getting fans excited weeks before the film’s release. The most prevalent rumor is that it will be an adaptation of The Dark Phoenix saga.
Thanks to Days of Future Past rebooting the original X-Men timeline, producers have a clean slate. Previous X-Men films have been erratic in terms of box office success, with the story all over the place. Add the fact that Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine will finally be retiring after Wolverine 3, the franchise needs to find a new gem from the comic books.
According to Cinema Blend, there is indication that FOX plans to use Sophie Turner’s Jean Grey in the adaptation of The Dark Phoenix saga. The storyline was already adapted in X-Men: The Last Stand, although the space-heavy material from the comics was left out.
Jean Grey’s character will be reintroduced in X-Men: Apocalypse along with those from the original trilogy, Cyclops and Storm. We can expect to see how Jean changes from her original self to the one we saw in X-Men:The Last Stand.
This storyline has the best shot at being the next installment in the X-Men franchise. In a report by Entertainment Weekly, Apocalypse director Bryan Singer hinted that Jean knows there is something dark and powerful building up inside her. This will be apparent during their early years in the Xavier mansion as they slowly adapt to their new lives as mutants.
The Dark Phoenix Saga is definitely a good choice for the next X-Men film. In the meantime, fans will have to enjoy X-Men: Apocalypse due to release next month.
