The New England Patriots took another blow to their campaign this season after quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo sustained an AC joint sprain, which could force him to miss games.
Garoppolo started for the Patriots in their first two games since star quarterback Tom Brady is still serving his four-game suspension for the Deflategate controversy. With Brady and Garoppolo out, the Patriots only have rookie Jacoby Brissett as their option at least in their next game against the Houston Texans.
The recent injury blows led to speculation that the Patriots will look to add another quarterback. And according to Boomer Esiason, the Patriots should make a call to legendary quarterback Peyton Manning.
“I got a name for you, the guy’s not even on the list,” Esiason told CBS via Sporting News. “He’s busy doing a lot of commercials. His name is Peyton Manning. Why not?”
Will the New England Patriots Really Sign Peyton Manning?
The Manning to Patriots scenario is a long shot despite the fact that New England need to sign a quarterback. The Patriots will welcome Brady back in their fifth game of the season, which means that they only need a new QB for two games, and Manning will likely not be open to that idea.
Sporting News also added that Manning will need a lot of time to learn the system. It is also unlikely that Manning is in good shape to play in the NFL again after announcing his retirement earlier this year. He will likely turn down a proposal for a short-term deal, knowing that it could do more harm than good to his reputation.
With no other good options in sight, the Patriots might settle for Brissett in their next two games or consider using Julian Edelman as quarterback. It is also worth noting that the Patriots are not officially ruling Garoppolo out in their upcoming game against the Texans, NESN reported.
