Ricky Rubio, the Minnesota Timberwolves point guard, could be headed to New York Knicks ahead of the February 18 deadline, per latest NBA Trade Rumors.
The Knicks, still yearning for a quality floor general, had been previously linked to the likes of Jeff Teague, Brandon Jennings and Ty Lawson. With Minnesota actively shopping Rubio, Knicks president Phil Jackson is considering making a move for the Spaniard.
Not a gamble?
According to Frank Isola of the New York Daily News, “Rubio is readily available” and is almost certain to be moved before Thursday’s deadline. Typically, a very injury-prone guard, Rubio has played 48 of 54 games for Timberwolves this year, after skipping 60 games last season with a series of injuries. Therefore, trading for Rubio isn’t considered a gamble anymore. Regardless of his history with injuries, Rubio is still an elite playmaker in the league.
What would Knicks have to give up? On paper, giving up Jose Calderon and Kevin Seraphin should prove enough to match Rubio’s $12.7 million salary. With Timberwolves wanting to get rid of Nikola Pekovic, too, there is a possibility that Robin Lopez and Pekovic are added in a multi-player deal which would shape up both teams.
Pekovic to be added to the mix…
ESPN Trade Machine has approved a trade which would see Knicks getting Rubio and Pekovic and Timberwolves acquiring Lopez, Calderon and Seraphin. It doesn’t sound too bad for either team. Ideally, Knicks would prefer Gorgui Dieng into the mix instead of Pekovic. However, Minnesota is very high on Dieng and want him to be Karl-Anthony Towns’ long term frontcourt partner.
“Phil Jackson is in the market for a point guard but it’s hard to envision the Knicks having the assets to acquire the 25-year-old Rubio, whose season average in points (9.7), assists (8.6) and minutes (30.3) are down this year,” writes Isola.
Zach LaVine’s emergence….
Minnesota is finally ready to gamble with LaVine as their point guard of the future. Some reckon that the athletic guard lacks the court vision to make the next step. However, he is turning to an offensive force in the league and deserves more playing time, per sources close to the Timberwolves.
Whether its Rubio, Teague, Lawson or Jennings, you can be rest assured that the New York Knicks will have a new point guard before this weekend.
