Orlando Magic have been reportedly trying to acquire Los Angeles Clippers star Blake Griffin in a trade of epic proportions, according to latest NBA Trade Rumors.
NBA Insider Steve Kyler revealed Tuesday that Magic are “swinging for the fences” and trying to engage Clippers in trade talks. Even though it’s widely acknowledged that Clippers are unwilling to trade their Power Forward, anything is possible ahead of the trade deadline on February 18.
Magic have several interesting assets, namely Victor Oladipo, rookie Mario Hezonja, Aaron Gordon and Tobias Harris, as well as Channing Frye. Hypothetically, the Clippers would stand to benefit a lot more if they can acquire three of those five players in exchange for Griffin.
Orlando is aggressively trying to improve their roster ahead of the deadline. They are 4-15 this year but could still make the playoffs with a decent run of victories. One gets the feeling that their roster is loaded with young talent but lacks veteran leadership needed to take the next step. Realistically, this Magic roster would be contending for championships in 3-4 years. But over the last few weeks, Magic have made it clear that they want to become relevant in the foreseeable future.
Per ESPN Trade Machine, Magic and Clippers could successfully complete a transaction which would send Tobias Harris and Victor Oladipo to L.A. for Griffin. This isn’t a bad deal for either team. Oladipo, the third-year guard, is a fringe all-star and is putting up impressive numbers this year. Harris has regressed a bit from last year but could thrive under the right system and coach.
According to Real GM, Clippers have received multiple trade proposals for Griffin, who does not return to the court until March following his five-game suspension. Despite the rumor buzz, the Clippers are determined to hold onto their star player.
“Blake’s ours and he’s going to stay ours,” Clippers coach Doc Rivers said ahead of the Clippers-Magic game on Friday.
