With Thursday’s trade deadline fast approaching, the Los Angeles Lakers are hoping to make a move for Victor Oladipo and Brook Lopez, per latest NBA Trade Rumors.
With a host of players available in trade talks, the Lakers view Orlando Magic two-guard Oladipo and Brooklyn Nets big man Lopez as the top targets in an attempt to strengthen their roster ahead of next season.
While the Lakers are still reluctant to part with the young trio of D’Angelo Russell, Jordan Clarkson and Julius Randle, they are ready to trade everyone else on the roster to add a quality wing such as Oladipo and an established big man like Lopez.
According to one source close to the Lakers, the team could be willing to give up Clarkson to acquire Oladipo since they both play at the same position. While Oladipo is capable of playing at the 3, Magic coach Scott Skiles has preferred to use the former No. 2 draft pick in the backcourt.
As of this moment, the Lakers are willing to part with Louis Williams for Oladipo. This straight-up swap has the approval of ESPN’s Trade Machine and should benefit both teams. While the Magic will acquire a veteran scorer, the Lakers get a dynamic wing who is averaging 14.3 points this season. Even though Oladipo’s numbers are down from last season, the Lakers view him as a top prospect.
Hibbert to Nets?
To acquire Lopez, Lakers need to convince both Roy Hibbert and the Nets to make a long-term commitment. With Hibbert’s contract set to expire, the only way Lakers can acquire Lopez is if the former Pacer agrees to ink a fresh deal with Brooklyn this offseason. With Hibbert no longer viewed as a max-worthy player, the Nets could get a bargain deal for the former all-star.
Brooklyn might ask Lakers to part with Randle, Larry Nance Jr. or both the young power forwards, along with Hibbert to pull off a successful trade. However, the Lakers realize that a direct swap between Hibbert and Lopez should get the job done. The question is: why would Nets agree to part with Lopez for a declining big man such as Hibbert?
