The Cleveland Cavaliers have asked Boston Celtics to forget about a deal involving Kevin Love, according to latest NBA Trade Rumors.
The Celtics have been bombarding the Cavaliers with potential offers to land the all-star power forward. However, the Cavaliers expect nothing less than a superstar piece in exchange for Love and not just trade picks.
At this stage, the Celtics are willing to trade six first round picks and David Lee’s expiring contract but the Cavaliers are least interested. According to a report from ESPN’s Marc Stein and Brian Windhorst, the Celtics don’t have the assets needed to acquire Love.
More Rumors: Lakers Pursue Oladipo, Lopez
“League sources say that the Cavs have made it clear to interested teams — starting, of course, with the Love-hungry Boston Celtics — that they’d covet a star in return if or when they do reach the point of letting Love go … and not a package of draft picks and role players like the Celtics are offering,” read the ESPN report.
Despite lacking star power, the Boston Celtics have shocked the league as the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference just 3 games behind top seed Cleveland Cavaliers. It’s fair to say that point guard Isaiah Thomas is the closest thing to an upper-echelon player in their ranks. The Cavaliers already have enough depth at the point guard position.
Unwilling to move Jae Crowder…
According to ESPN’s Stephen A Smith, Boston should be able to acquire Love by dealing small forward Jae Crowder and the war chest of draft picks. However, Boston GM Danny Ainge is very high on Crowder and is unwilling to part with the forward. In an ideal scenario, it would be hard for the Cavaliers to ignore a package involving Crowder, Lee and six draft picks.
More Rumors: Lakers To Move Russell For Jabari Parker?
Boston has been linked with Love for many years, since the days of Kevin McHale in Minnesota. This is their time to finally acquire the power forward but not without sacrificing key pieces. Will Love really help Boston become a better team? Doubtful.
It would be wise for Boston to move on from Love and focus on other two-tier and three-tier players. They have plenty to offer to teams who are deprived of draft picks.
