Boston Celtics will make a hard push at acquiring superstar free agent Kevin Durant during the off-season, according to latest NBA Rumors.
The Celtics are armed with plenty of cap space, a highly successful coach and a battery of young talent that has led the team to the third seed in the competitive Eastern Conference. Most pundits reckon that Boston is just one superstar piece away from becoming the best team in the East.
Last week, reports emerged saying Durant would leave Oklahoma City Thunder unless the team reaches the NBA Finals in June. At this juncture, it’s safe to say that Thunder are likely to be defeated in a best-of-seven series against Golden State Warriors and/or San Antonio Spurs.
Why Durant and Celtics are a great match…
- Exiting the West: Durant will no longer have to worry about Warriors, Spurs and Los Angeles Clippers. His potential path to the finals will be a lot easier, except for running into LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Surely, his odds of making the finals will be higher.
- Legacy factor: Celtics, with 17 championships, are the most illustrious franchise in NBA history. Not since Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett have the Celtics been represented by a future Hall of Fame talent. Durant has the chance to fill Larry Bird and Pierce’s shoes.
- Alpha male: Unlike in Oklahoma City Thunder, where he is currently the co-franchise player along with Russell Westbrook, Durant will get the opportunity to be the go-to man in Boston. The Celtics appreciate superstar talent and will give him all the freedom he needs.
If the Celtics make it past the second round in the forthcoming playoffs, expect Durant to grant Danny Ainge a face-to-face meeting when free agency begins. Granted that at least 3-4 teams will be allowed to meet Durant but the Celtics will become a favorable destination for the superstar forward.
