Since joining Oklahoma City Thunder as assistant coach, Monty Williams has managed to develop strong connections with Kevin Durant.
Williams has reportedly penetrated “Durant’s circumspect venner.”
“When he talks to Monty,” the person close to the team’s training camp said, “he’s like a little kid talking to his father. He stares at him, listens to every word he says.”
Durant has gelled very comfortably with Oklahoma City Thunder’s new offensive style and is gearing up to excel in the coming season, the key being his understanding with Williams.
“New system, new coach,” Durant said. “Feels like a new era of basketball.”
Williams joined Oklahoma City Thunder on June 3 as assistant coach. Apart from his coaching skills, another reason behind roping in Williams was that he was capable of keeping the superstar forward in OKC due to their warm relationship. Anthony Slater of The Daily Oklahoma wrote, “In an interview last year, Durant labeled Williams among those around the league he admired most. ‘I’m the one who should be looking up to him,’ Williams said when told of Durant’s comment. ‘He’s a wonderful man and I enjoy being around him.'”
Recently there were rumors that Durant could join Los Angeles Lakers if at all he decides to leave Thunder. But the forward himself ridiculed the growing rumors.
Williams’ presence at Oklahoma can make Durant more enthusiastic to guide the Thunder side to the playoffs.
