Motorola has begun sending out invites to an event where, based on the invite, the company might reveal new information on the Moto 360, along with a possible reveal of new Moto X and Moto G smartphones, as well as a possible new Motorola headset accessory. The event is set to happen on the 4th of September at the company’s Chicago office in the Merchandise Mart building, which used to be recognized as the largest building in the world.
The invite uses the classic origami paper fortune teller game to tease the possible agendas of the event which show the silhouettes of a Moto 360-looking watch, one smartphone with an X on its screen, another smartphone with a G on its screen, and a human ear with a small headset-looking device. The invite also shows the taglines – “Choose to have fun”, “Choose a new experience”, and “Choose to join us”.
The Moto 360 was originally unveiled along with the Android Wear last March and is one of the world’s first devices that run on Google’s wearable-centric operating system. The smartwatch was also previewed back in June during Google’s I/O developer conference but even then Motorola withheld information on when the device would officially release but it looks like the company is finally ready to announce the Moto 360’s official release date at next month’s event.
Both the previous Moto X and Moto G phones were critical successes so it’s exciting to see the company deciding to iterate on both of them with the possible unveiling of new models next month.
Motorola did pick a pretty unusual time to hold their event as Samsung is also scheduled and expected to reveal the Galaxy note 4 at its Unpacked event just the day before and Apple is expected to unveil the new iPhone at their own event a week after. This puts Motorola in the middle of two industry bullies and arch-enemies and it might end up going unnoticed.
