As mobile devices are growing in popularity and the sales of tablets and smartphones continue to climb, more and more people are using their mobile devices to access the Internet. New research shows that people are now spending more than half of their time that is spent on the Internet by using mobile devices.
When looking at the totals, 39 percent of the time spent on the Internet is now done via smartphones while 12 percent of the time people spend on the Internet is done through tablets. The trend of using mobile devices for Internet access appears to be growing, as 66 percent of adults access the Internet through both, personal computers and mobile devices.
The time spent on mobile devices has almost doubled during the last three years. The study shows that 890 billion minutes are spent on mobile devices compared to 452 billion minutes during the year of 2010. Regardless of the gains in the various areas, the time spent online has increased more than 20 percent since its total in 2010. So, PC users must be considered for a significant amount of time online as well.
The study also focused on different age groups and genders. According to the research, women between the ages of 25 to 49 are more likely to access the Internet by using mobile devices. Women in that age group are also more likely to spend the most time on the Internet through mobile devices. The next age group most likely to use the Internet through a mobile device consists of those ages 18 to 24.
Respondents ages 50 and older indicate they are comfortable using multiple platforms for Internet access. Respondents in the older age group indicate they spend 41 percent of their time online using a mobile device.
The number of tablets and smartphones being sold each year continues to climb, so one can assume that since more people are now purchasing the devices more people will be using them to access the Internet. Since approximately half of the time spent on the Internet is through a mobile device, one can only assume as more are sold that the percentage will also increase.
As more and more people are using mobile devices for Internet access, it is safe to assume that advertisers will be targeting the mobile market more and more Internet ads will placed for those using mobile devices to get online.
