After weeks of silence, Ariadna Gutierrez, Miss Universe’s Miss Colombia 2015, finally said her piece. According to her, the fault of Steve Harvey crowning her as the champion instead as the first runner-up was both humiliating and humbling for her and the Latinas.
Last December 21, 2015, the most devastating and shocking thing happened when Miss Colombia was declared Miss Universe 2015. While the beauty queen was offered the crown, flowers, and was made to do her first walk as Miss Universe, Steve Harvey, the host of the event, came forward and said, “I have to apologize. Miss Universe 2015 first runner-up is Miss Colombia. Miss Universe 2015 is Miss Philippines.”
Since then, the tabloids fired up and both girls, as well as the host, were scrutinized by many. Gutierrez was stripped off from the crown and cried on stage as several other pageant contestants comforted the Miss Universe first runner-up.
Since then, Miss Colombia was silent. However, last Wednesday, Gutierrez was interviewed by W Radio wherein she finally spoke about the unfortunate event. She relayed her disappointment. She said, “I was disconnected. I haven’t received phone calls from almost anyone. Very few people have communicated with me. That’s because I had to grieve for what happened.”
She also referred to the event as a “great injustice.” According to Fox News, Gutierrez said, “It was very humiliating for me, but also for the whole country and for all the people not only from Colombia but all other Latinos that were in the auditorium.”
She also expressed her thoughts when she was de-crowned and said, “[I thought] this is going to be a joke, because in the rehearsals, he used to play around with questions and I thought he was going to continue with that same tone to make people laugh. If that was the goal, they succeeded.”
After the incident, Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, published a photo of herself on Miss Universe official Facebook page and said, “…To Ariadna, you are an amazing woman and we are now bonded together forever by a unique experience. In the last three weeks we were together, I saw how strong and beautiful you are inside and out. You represented your country with honor and I know how proud everyone must be of you.”
On that note, Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez finished the interview saying, “I managed to make history which I think is more important than winning the Miss Universe title.” Well said, Miss Universe 2015 first runner-up!
