A middle school teacher has taken her own life as the investigation into her relationship with a student continues.
47-year-old Gretchen Krohnfeldt committed suicide on Tuesday. She reportedly killed herself in front of police officers who were approaching her home in Arvada, Colorado. Police had showed up to question her regarding the investigation. Jefferson County Coroner’s Office Chief Deputy Coroner Dan Pruett said Krohnfeldt was pronounced dead at her home at 1 PM. The cause of death is still pending, but Pruett said if may be available by Friday.
Krohnfeldt worked as a teacher at the Drake Middle School. On Monday, the school decided to place her on administrative leave as both the Arvada Police Department and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office conducted their investigation into her relationship with a student.
An employee came forward with information regarding Krohnfeldt’s inappropriate relationship with a student.
According to a report from the Denver Post, an employee had come forward regarding the alleged relationship. Meanwhile, according to a report from CBS News, the said employee had witnessed the inappropriate relationship between Krohnfeldt and the student months ago, but had only come forward on Monday. The principal then decided to immediately inform call law enforcement as well as school district officials.
“Our office has received several inquiries about a teacher death and related allegations,” Drake Middle School said in a statement. “Our information is limited and we do not want to compromise the investigation; and most importantly, our Jeffco family is deeply affected by this incident and respecting all involved is a priority.”
Krohnfeldt was allegedly in a relationship with a student in Arvada while he was attending middle school. The said student is now in a high school in Arvada.
Krohnfeldt leaves behind three children. According to a report from 9 News, she has been a teacher in Jefferson County since 1993. She taught English language arts, social studies and reading intervention.
Following Krohnfeldt’s death, the Drake Middle School issued a statement saying, “Our hearts go out to her family at this painful time, and I know many will feel this loss deeply.” According to CBS Denver, the school is also providing mental health counselors for any student who needs additional emotional support at this difficult time.
There is no information regarding Krohnfeldt’s memorial service at this time.
