Microsoft Rolls Out New Cortana vs Siri Video, Announces New Windows 8.1 Features

Microsoft Rolls Out New Cortana vs Siri Video, Announces New Windows 8.1 FeaturesMicrosoft today released a new video entitled “Happy Anniversary” which compares its new Cortana virtual assistant to competitor Apple’s own virtual assistant, Siri.

The commercial itself shows Cortana running on a Nokia Lumia 635 beside an iPhone 5S with Siri. Microsoft using the Lumia 635 could be intentional to show that even their lower-specced devices can still run Cortana. The narrator in the video asks Cortana (and Siri, indirectly) a few things including reminding him to wish his wife a happy birthday the next time she calls and to buy roses when he comes near any flower shop. While  Cortana responded to the requests with affirmatives, Siri, on the other hand, is unable to comply with the requests. Lastly, the video shows Cortana automatically giving a the narrator a traffic alert reminding him to leave early. This is when Siri responds with “Now that is a smart phone.”

This is the latest of many times Microsoft (or Apple) has released a video to both advertise their product and bash the competition. Before this, Microsoft used Siri to mock the iPad in the company’s first commercials for Windows 8.

Microsoft also released a few details on its upcoming first update to Windows Phone 8.1 which will bring a few new features including the introduction of folder support which will allow users to stack Tiles into a folder for better organization. Another new incoming feature with Update 1 is support for interactive case accessories which will allow functions such as automatically waking up of the device when the case is opened. Other upcoming features include support for the 1280 x 800 screen resolution and 7-inch devices, a new medium Live Tile for the Store app, and Voice over LTE support. The company didn’t mention when the update would begin rolling out but the update is expected to roll out to developers soon.
