The world is mourning the loss of another great actor. Swedish actor Michael Nyqvist passed away Tuesday, June 27, after battling with lung cancer, his representative has confirmed.
“On behalf of Michael Nyqvist’s representatives and family, it is with deep sadness that I can confirm that our beloved Michael, one of Sweden’s most respected and accomplished actors, has passed away quietly surrounded by family after a year-long battle with lung cancer,” his rep, Jenny Tversky, said in a statement to The Associated Press. “Michael’s joy and passion were infectious to those who knew and loved him. His charm and charisma were undeniable, and his love for the arts was felt by all who had the pleasure of working with him.”
The Stockholm-born actor gained international fame for portraying Mikael Blomkvist in the original Swedish Dragon Tattoo trilogy, which included The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest. Its success helped spawn an American film adaptation, which was released in 2011. Daniel Craig played Nyqvist’s role as Blomkvist, and Rooney Mara starred as Lisbeth Salander.
Nyqvist then later appeared in Hollywood action thrillers like John Wick and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. His other notable projects include Colonia, where he starred opposite Michael Bruhl and Emma Watson; and the Donovan March-directed submarine-set action-thriller Hunter Killer.
Before his death, Nyqvist also completed roles in thriller Hunter Killer with Gerard Butler and Gary Oldman and submarine disaster Kursk with Colin Firth and Matthias Schoenaerts. Both films have no release dates yet.
Apart from acting, Nyqvist also tried his hand at writing. He published an autobiographical memoir titled Just After Dreaming (När barnet lagt sig in Swedish) in 2010. According to Variety, the novel was a compilation of memories from his childhood, detailing his life from his adoption as a baby to tracking down his biological parents at the age 30.
Michael Nyqvist is survived by his wife, Catharina Ehrnrooth –a production designer — and their children, Ellen and Arthur. He was 56.
